Événement de la Chambre
This year’s summer excursion will take place on Saturday May 20th 2017. The excursion will be at the impressive castle Dragsholm Slot, situated in the beautiful surroundings of Odsherred, close to Sejerø-bugten, north-west of Holbæk. The castle visit will be complemented by a visit to the church Fårevejle Kirke.
The excursion is organised by architect Ulla Hellner in collaboration with our former president Holger de Neergaard as well as with Kim Meurs-Gerken.
Dragsholm Slot is one of Denmark’s oldest operating secular buildings. The castle is more than 800 years old (its first reference being approximately of year 1215) and it bears an extremely interesting and dramatic history.
Dragsholm Slot has lived through periods of wars, destruction by fire, large noble societies, bishops and much more – for instance it has also served as a royal palace as well as a prison for noble and clerical persons whom the Crown disliked.
The most famous person to live at the castle was the Scottish Earl of Bothwell who took part in the wars of religion between the Catholics and the Protestants at that time. The Earl lived a highly dramatic life which involved royal affection, murder, high politics, imprisonment, insanity and death. He was committed to prison by King Frederik the 2nd and imprisoned in the dungeon of the castle in which he died after 11 years of confinement. The Earl of Bothwell was buried in the neighbouring church Fårevejle Kirke where he since 1949 had his final resting place in the crypt below the church.
The numerous dramatic events at Dragsholm Slot throughout a good 800 years have caused several legends concerning the different occurrences to appear over time. Among others one about ghosts haunting the castle.
We encourage you to participate in this exciting excursion that offers an insight in the history of Denmark and gives you an opportunity to meet other members of the Chamber. As usual you are welcome to bring along your family and friends on the trip.
