Conference “Sustainable as Inclusive: Toward a French approach on sustainable cities"

“Sustainable as Inclusive: Towards a French approach on sustainable cities”.

Today 55% of the world’s population live in a city or urban area. By 2050 two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities, says UN reports. Thus, sustainable urban planning and development is thus more important than ever.

On occasion of the C40 World Mayors summit in Copenhagen the Danish-French Chamber of Commerce and the French Embassy organized a conference under the title “Sustainable as Inclusive: Towards a French approach on sustainable cities”.

The French approach to developing sustainable cities is based on the idea gathering different actors to co-build a smarter city in a user-centric way, where social inclusion, mobility and connectivity is integrated in the architecture, public spaces, and transport. These ideas and principles have played a key role in the preparing of the Paris 2024 Olympics. By consequently following and developing these principles the French Olympic Games Delivery Authority, SOLIDEO, has developed a state-of-the-art approach to creating sustainable cities and urban spaces.

To elaborate on these principles and strategies Nicolas Ferrand, CEO of SOLIDEO, presented the infrastructure strategies of the Olympics projects and gave several examples from both large and small urban spaces in Paris. Besides French and Danish organizations, the Deputy Mayor of Paris, Jean-Louis Missika presented his general work with sustainability in Paris. Furthermore, a delegation from South Africa participated and Mayor of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, presented their work with a sustainable urban transition in Johannesburg.

Besides our keynote speakers and moderator, Mr. Gérard Wolf, several companies participated in two round tables:

Round Table 1: Governance as a key asset: Toward a user centric approach to co-build smarter cities:

  • Herman Mashaba (Mayor of Johannesburg)
  • Jean-Louis Missika (Deputy Mayor of Paris)
  • Carole Brozyna-Diagne, Chief sustainability & quality officer (JC Decaux)

Round Table 2: Connected cities: Creating tangible links between city users:

  • Carmen Munoz (CEO, Citelum Group)
  • Philippe Delleur (Senior Vice President Public Affairs, Alstom)
  • Jean-Luc Chapoton (Group International Development Director chez RATP Dev

The conference ended with a cocktail where speakers and audience had the chance to meet and continue the conversation.

The conference was held at the premises of Njord Law firm.
